For the second time in the award’s 12-year history, all five nominees are female, and three are women of colour — a notable accomplishment in a literary landscape where the major prizes continue to be dominated by white men.

5 Under 35 is an annual prize that honours five young and promising fiction writers, each selected by a National Book Award Winner or Finalist.

Brittney Cooper - Beyond Respectability: The Intellectual Thought of Race Women

Brittney Cooper is a Black feminist theorist who specializes in the study of Black women’s intellectual history, Hip Hop generation feminism, and race and gender representation in popular culture.

It is a collection of biographies of incredible women in history, that was written in a witty and very enjoyable way. Every woman had something to teach us, and it actually boosted my self-confidence, while reading it. The authors picked very particular women, not necessarily very well known ones, but very admirable and influential nevertheless.

Some of these women might’ve seemed negative, but every single one had something to teach us, and let’s be honest, we are not angels sometimes either.

"I read it in my teens and it hooked me on mysterious China! I love novels about China and its history and culture, especially the story of women; so complex and colorful, and often so twisted, too."

"Alderman challenges the cliché that women are more noble than men, and that a world run by women would be more gentle, with benevolent leaders and no war. In fact, women become power hungry and begin to repress men. They commit war atrocities, perform male genital mutilation, rape and maim for sport and kill to occupy land. With power dynamics reversed, the women don’t choose a righteous path – they act no better than men who have abused power throughout history. I think Alderman’s point is that people who abuse, do so because they can."

"Francis Poletti writes books for children, but her stories are for everyone. They’re stories about women in history who were the first to achieve something, and what they had to battle against at that time, and how they preserved and pushed through and ended up achieving their dreams. “The Girl Who Ran,” is about a young heroine who is told that women can’t run, that running is against the rules, but she does it anyway."

[Conversations with Amelia] by [Kathleen Schmitt] cover both the history of one of the greatest women, Amelia Earhart, but also the growing pains of a family after WWII. All seen through the eyes of Hannah, who is very naive in the beginning. Her confidant is an imaginary Amelia who gives her good advice and keeps her "flying right".

I have been looking forward to reading this book because Amelia Earhart is one of my favorite figures in history. I was not disappointed. It is well written and interweaves the history with the events happening in the story so that it has a really nice flow. I highly recommend reading this book.

"For centuries, the making of textiles has traditionally fallen to women. And, the subsequent fabrics they create are often regarded as frivolous objects. But from birth to death, fabric is a constant in our lives, and has been for centuries. In The Golden Thread: How Fabric Changed History Kassia St. Clair deftly, and exhaustively tackles the 30,000 year history of fabric. This isn’t a book I devoured from start to finish, but I keep returning to whenever I start to take fibers for granted."
