First movie in the theater for well over a year and it's unironically, no joke one of the worst looking ones I've seen in all my years. Jeffrey Dean Morgan's "The Walking Dead" money must be getting pretty thin - at least 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘗𝘰𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯 was actually rather fun and goofy and all that. Such an appealing premise with tons of smart ideas about weaving a horror film out of the commercialization of religion - among many other things - gets thrown to the wayside in favor of yet another asinine, careless cash-grab with the worst 2008 flash game jumpscares of all time. Though newcomer Cricket Brown is terrific in the only performance of the whole film which can't be described as a sleepwalk. I audibly remarked "Oh my good God" at how appalling this below-Disney Channel Original Movie CGI is, it's a wonder how this didn't even end up comically bad. And it's boring! Depressing to see that this is the type of shit Cary Elwes shows up in now. The real miracle is that I actually got through it.

From there it travels to Asia to discuss economic stratification and Europe to explore art and mental health, culminating in a stirring homecoming to troubled America, where family, the future, and what matters most rise to the forefront of consideration.

Through all of it, Courtright displays a deft hand, at once pained, at once bright, to discover that although the wider world seems farther away than before, the lessons it offers are more needed than ever.

"The first Rocky. Just an amazing movie. Whatever the hunger is, the fight, literally and figuratively, that Sylvester Stallone had in him to make the movie, right? To go through people saying, “Nah, nah.” And even Carl Weathers said, at one point, “Okay, this is incredible. So who’ll play Rocky?” And they’re like, “Sylvester Stallone, this young kid nobody knows.” And just him selling the dog, getting the dog back, the whole story behind it — during pre-production he buys the dog back. And Talia Shire was amazing, Francis Ford Coppola’s sister. It was just Sly Stallone at his very best, even as a writer-producer. And the incredible actor who played Mickey, Burgess Meredith. It’s an amazing movie you can watch over and over, no matter the gender or color or creed or religion. Rocky is a survivor’s movie, an American tale of a young kid trying to make good, and he finally makes good. It’s just such a great movie. The wardrobing, the score, the music, it’s unbelievable."

Rather uneven comedy melodrama from very early in Pedro Almodovar's career. A cabaret singer hides out in a convent; the Mother Superior has a heroin habit, the nuns have names like Sister Manure and Sister Sewer Rat, one of them writes schlocky bestsellers on the quiet and another keeps a pet tiger in the convent gardens.

Apparently intended as a critique of the anachronism of organised religion in modern Spain, and to begin with the film's various provocations are diverting and amusing, but the jokes dry up after a while and any serious points the film is making get lost in all the silliness. The fact the main character is played by a non-actress does not help. The plot is the kind of mixture of deep emotion and absurd contrivance that Almodovar has built a career on, but at this point he was yet to master making you invest in it and care about the characters. Kind of diverting and interestingly weird in places, but clearly the work of a director still paying his dues.
