Gritty, old-school British war film, where keeping a stiff upper lip is at least as important as seeing off the enemy. During the Korean War, a patrol runs into trouble and must take shelter on a hill-top with no way down; the enemy close in. Sort of a bit like Zulu, I suppose, it certainly has the same sort of cast (many well-known faces on the way up) and feeling of sweaty heroism in extremis.

Good performances and well-staged, authentic-feeling action; Portugal stands in for Korea, not especially convincingly. Most likely a bit problematic by modern standards: cast consists entirely of white dudes, one of whom is unconvincingly made up to be the patrol's Korean guide. But it was the 1950s, after all.

The Abyss (1989)
The Abyss (1989)
1989 | Mystery, Sci-Fi
James Cameron makes his second appearance on this list with 1989’s The Abyss. This terrifying film that gave countless children nightmares for months follows a civilian diving team as they are enlisted to search for a lost nuclear submarine. Unbeknownst to them, danger lurks in the deep when they encounter an alien aquatic species.

The special effects may look dated by today’s standards, but The Abyss is over 25 years old and still looks pretty darn good, even in 2019 when CGI has come on so far. Ed Harris puts in a fantastic performance and the eerie depths of the ocean are only matched by the blankness of space in modern-day sci-fi movies. Truly horrifying.

Vincent Price Broods Over His Dead Wife's Portrait (Yet Again)
Roger Corman's cycle of Poe-inspired movies goes into full-on comedy mode with this tale of squabbling magicians (played by Vincent Price, Peter Lorre and Boris Karloff). It is, obviously, only very loosely inspired by Poe's poem, but then you can only stretch 108 lines of verse so far.

The fun is in the performances, with the veteran cast members competing to ham it up more extravagantly. Also knocking about the lower reaches of the cast list is Jack Nicholson, really showing not much sign of the talent that would earn him so many Oscar nominations in later years.

Knockabout stuff, but well played and often very funny. Not actually much of a horror movie, though, certainly by modern standards.

Aliens (1986)
Aliens (1986)
1986 | Action, Horror, Sci-Fi
James Cameron's muscular sequel doesn't muck about admiring the art direction or trying to be atmospheric, but reinvents the original movie as a gut-busting action thriller. Slimy corporate types have colonised the planet on which a lethal alien predator was discovered in the first film; now contact has been lost and sole survivor Ripley is sent in with the troops to investigate. The ultimate fate of the cat remains a mystery.

After a long, tense build-up, once the action kicks off the film feels relentless, and in the Queen Alien it comes up with a monster just as iconic as the original creature. Great ensemble cast led by Weaver, terrific set pieces, interesting subtext about the maternal instinct. Every other Alien film since has been judged by the standards established here.

A Good Classic Game
This is a classic game, it has been around for a long long long time. What's great is that almost everyone knows the rules. What is not so great is that everyone is on a different level of playing skill. The game isn't much fun if you are on a lower level. It's a very dry game. There are better games out there. Especially modern games. There are very few classic games that compare. At this point in games, the King, has be turned into a pawn.

Chess is a classic game where people can easily learn the rules, but the gameplay is very abstract.

Decent spin-off
I was a bit surprised when I heard this spin off from Fast and Furious was being made. I guess it fills a gap between the next one. This delivers what you expect. Plenty of over the top action and unrealistic stunts, along with a fair bit of banter between the lead characters. There are some memorable scenes, the chase through London was great. The plots are slowly getting more absurd though. There are also some nice cameos you wouldn't expect. It was funnier than I thought it would be which was a bonus. If you like the Fast & Furious films you should enjoy this as well, although you can leave your brain in neutral.
