Ma (2019)

There are a lot of instances where someone will complain about the whole movie being shown in the trailer and I just roll my eyes and move on. In general, I feel like it's more about how we get to the end of a story than it is about specific plot points or any twists there may be. In the case of Ma, however, I totally agree. It's not that there were any twists ruined or secrets revealed in the trailers, it's that the parts that weren't revealed were just filler. Literally nothing happened to expand on the presumptions we made about Ma. Every shocking part that would make us cringe as viewers was revealed before we even set foot in the theater. There's a good idea in here somewhere, it was just never allowed to bloom. Octavia Spencer is excellent, and I genuinely hope she takes more sinister roles from here on out. Truthfully, I can't fault any of the actors for their part. There just didn't turn out to be a whole lot to work with.

Ivy takes on an undercover job at Gold Bug Gulch, where one of the gun fighters has just been shot and killed. As she gets to know the employees at the tourist trap ghost town, she finds plenty of suspects, but was it an accident or murder? Meanwhile, she also trying to land a part in Annie Get Your Gun for a theater company that might really boost her career and keep her relationship with her new boyfriend on track.

Since I’ve loved the first three books in this series, I was expecting to love this one, and I wasn’t disappointed at all. The story moves forward quickly, and the characters are strong. The author finds that perfect balance of comedy without making anything or anyone not feel real. In fact, there’s some real depth to these characters by the end. Throw in the acting, and I completely enjoyed it.

NOTE: I received an ARC of this book.

Stick to the original
Something just didn't translate here. From the '70s to the current time, culture has changed, and so has drug habits. I was sitting in the theater wondering what city in the States has a cocaine flow like that, but I suppose that's neither here nor there.

The plot is basically the same: drug heists, setups, betrayals. It just sort of fell flat. Priest ended up looking more like a hipster that hangs around Starbucks, not Superfly. His hairstyle (a rather pronounced side-parted quiff) ended up looking silly. And speaking of silly, the sex scene was slightly comedic. It felt shoe-horned in. It doesn't quite flow in the context of the film. And one of the actresses obviously didn't get paid enough to go topless, so they used trick angles to cover her breasts. Normally I wouldn't complain (you do you), but it doesn't fit with the genre of film.

I don't know. Everything fell flat to me. It didn't even have anything to laugh at.

Basically a new spin to vampirism (0 more)
The slow stabbing and cutting death of a screaming child, and going after other children was too much for me. (0 more)
Interesting spin

The movie takes place several decades after "The Shining", Danny is still haunted by the events from the hotel and is even hunted by the evil that was there. He has found a way to trap the "evil spirits". He makes use of his "shining" and it becomes a great story, however the main protagonist is a group of people that have the same special power as Danny and even more, but they've also learned how to suck the power from young children and this results in what I don't think needs to be in cinema. This world is evil enough as it is and to watch a child be cut and stabbed to death slowly while a group kneels over him inhaling his essence is revolting, I almost left the theater over it.
0/10 snore factor, cant sleep through this one!
