Awix (3310 KP) rated Deadpool (2016) in Movies

Not the first R-rated superhero movie, nor the first superhero comedy film, nor even the first movie to feature Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson, but it does a good job of appearing to do something new and different, and has lots of good jokes. Garrulous mercenary volunteers for special procedure in attempt to fend off terminal illness; basically ends up with cancer as a super-power.
The plot is really very secondary to the style of the film, anyway, which is all about being very irreverent and transgressive towards the perceived conventions of the superhero movie; there's a bit of a straw man argument being made here, but the action is well staged and it is, as mentioned, very funny. Not the future of the genre, no matter what people may say, but a well-crafted piece of entertainment nevertheless.

Alison Pink (7 KP) rated Look Again: A Novel in Books

Oh my gosh! Such a GREAT book!!! I was guessing until the very end & that doesn't happen very often with me & a book like this. The characters were very well written & believable without being too over the top. The story was heartfelt with plenty of twists & turns to keep the reader guessing. This is a must read for anyone that loves a good book!!!

Engaging storyline (1 more)
Faultless acting
I remember finishing the PS3 version and being in awe. Just recently replayed the remaster. Is hard to improve on perfection but it brings the graphics up well.
What a masterpiece. Never has a game brought me to tears of both sadness and joy. An incredible journey of emotion and heart pounding action. Do yourself a favour and play it.

Chris Hooker (419 KP) rated Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis in Books
Aug 5, 2018
This was listened to on audiobook on the drive from GA to NJ. It was a well told memoir and I am pretty sure the narrator was the actual author. It is a story about overcoming odds being stacked against you. This book made me think about things that need to be addressed if we ever expect things to get better overall in our country.
Dean (6926 KP) rated Seven Pounds (2008) in Movies
Aug 26, 2018
A good story, well told and Will Smith is growing on me as a serious actor. The main problem with this is it is far too obvious right from the off what is going to happen and why. We then spend a long time waiting for the build up to the conclusion. Still a fine film though, but it lost it's impact by being too predictable.
Dean (6926 KP) rated Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties (2006) in Movies
Sep 11, 2018
A surprisingly good part animated comedy based on the Garfield comic strip. I liked this one more than the first one. This has plenty of other animals being voiced over by a range of well known actors including Bob Hoskins as a British bulldog and Vinnie Jones as a rottweiler, what else? With Bill Murray voicing Garfield. Perfect for kids and older fans of Garfield.
Ross (3284 KP) rated Parks and Recreation - Season 4 in TV

This show just gets better and better. Each character is now so well established that every scene moves along perfectly, with each adding their own points and jokes but the storyline moving along.
There is more of an underlying story here than in previous series but this in no way gets in the way of the show being as silly and irreverent as normal.
