Funnier than hell - but evenly painful. As far as straight up vanity projects go, this is one of the better ones - the only thing keeping it from a full five is that it isn't truly long enough to always delve into the surfeit of topics/arcs it adds into the mix. But when there's one hell of a cast like this one, it's incredibly easy to forgive. Chris Rock is one of the funniest people who has ever lived but JB Smoove, Anders Holm (we miss ya, bro), Jerry Seinfeld, and DMX practically steal his own movie away from him. I confess this is vaguely problematic in that it's another movie about a rich asshole who everyone is supposed to suck up to, but it's formulated in such a way that breaks from that usual pungent norm - for the most part. Plus that cinematography is *aces*. The best Woody Allen movie in over a decade and that mf had nothing to do with it. Petition for Chris Rock to write + direct again, anyone?

Just nukes the ever-loving fuck out of the book. To turn a pretty bloody and challenging series into this hyperincompetent snooze of shit storytelling, genre rehashing, and violently diluted themes (or what's left of them, if anything) should have been criminalized on arrival. Find me anyone who can tell me what the plot of this is or why anything in it happens, this is 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘋𝘢 𝘝𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘪 𝘊𝘰𝘥𝘦 of crummy children's fantasy flicks (which were the 2000s answer to the dull, samey YA craze of the 2010s). Oh and those Academy Award winning effects? They're fucking ghoulish. The production is nice but how anyone could think this mess of badly-aged animation and awful greenscreen work looks good is far beyond me. The armored polar bears were pretty dope though, and this wakes up a bit in the weird 15 minutes where a group of crazy institution fanatics start experimenting on children out in like the middle of the arctic for no real reason lmao. But otherwise absolutely not, no thank you.

Bizarre, enjoyable.
269. The Lodgers. This was a bizarre tale, but I enjoyed still... It takes place in 1920 Ireland and tells the story of twin siblings Rachel and Edward as their 18th birthday approaches, and a destiny to fulfill... Not to weird right? But I didn't mention that they have to follow some strict rules in this house!! And one of the big ones is bedtime, because the night belongs to their parents, ya know the ones that died a few years back, by committing suicide in a lake... yea. Did I mention that their parents were also twin siblings? And their parents before them?? So there is that. Edward is a ghost of a person, never leaves the house completely depends on Rachel, and seems to be ok with succumbing to their fate, while Rachel is looking for a way out, and she might be a little more devious than she lets on. You be the judge! Some cool imagery, and definitely creepy at times, a cool tale to check out... filmbufftim on FB

Who ya gonna call?
In the vein of such mismatched buddy action crime comedies like Midnight Run, 48 Hours, and National Security, Stuber pairs ex-wrestler Dave Bautista (Vic) and stand-up Kumail Nanjiani (Stu). Vic is a Los Angeles detective with a lead on the drug lord he has been investigating for years who murdered his partner. He gets eye surgery in a plot device to pass his firearm test so he is effectually blind. Stu is a sporting goods employee in the friend zone with a beautiful blonde he has known since college who has just broken up with her boyfriend and needs some Stu-love. Stu also works nights as an Uber driver with a checkered history. One night after crashing his Ford Crown VIctoria, Vic uses the Uber app his daughter installed on his phone so he could safely attend his sculpture exhibition. Stu takes the ride and rides along as Vic chases his white whale. Soon, Stu gets a load of testerone from the steroid-addicted Vic and Vic learns to express his emotions from the metrosexual Stu.
